John Vanderslice
Some know John Vanderslice as a musician, engineer, and producer. However when I think of JV, the kindest human on the planet comes to mind. He's a pleasure to work with and makes my day job just that much better. His music, a beautiful mix of acoustic instruments, analog drum machines and digital textures, is invariably thoughtful, carefully crafted and affecting.
His latest effort, White Wilderness (released last week on Dead Oceans), was recorded live in a span of three days with San Francisco’s Magik*Magik Orchestra and arranged by Minna Choi. That being quite a departure from his previous albums which were created by months of tinkering, rewriting and overdubbing in his San Francisco studio, Tiny Telephone. I've been listening to this record all weekend. You can stream White Wilderness in its entirety here.
West Coasters...see JV live in February...
Feb 10, 2011 - Santa Cruz, CA -- the Crepe Place
Feb 11, 2011 - Oakland, Ca -- New Parish
Feb 12, 2011 - Stockton, Ca -- Plea For Peace Center
Tiny Telephone got some interior design love last year thanks to SF based artist, Claire Mack. Her two-wall reclaimed wood and art installation is brilliant. You can see more of Claire's work here at her site.
JV's tumblr not only showcases his life in the studio and as a musician but also gives you glimpses of everyday things that make him happy...like his abundant blooms of echium and photos from his travels.
